Produced by Atlantica Leather S.r.L. in Santa Croce sull’Arno, Italy, the Saturania article is a masterclass in equine leather. Known for their “shell-on” hides, Atlantica tanners utilize centuries-old vegetable tanning techniques to create a leather that is both incredibly dense and visually unpredictable.
The Anatomy of Saturania
-
The “Shell” Connection: Saturania is cut from the horse butt, the specific area containing the “shell” (the membrane used for Shell Cordovan). Unlike polished cordovan, Atlantica keeps the natural grain intact, resulting in a fascinating transition between rugged hide and glass-smooth shell sections.
-
Tumbled for Character: Unlike stiff, flat leathers, the Saturania article is often tumbled. This process breaks the grain to create a unique, shrunken texture that highlights the natural “rolls” and growth marks of the horsehide.
-
Pure Vegetable Tannage: Using organic extracts from mimosa, chestnut, and quebracho, Atlantica produces a leather that is “alive.” It responds to its environment, deepening in color and developing a rich, oily patina that cannot be replicated by synthetic processes.
-
Full Aniline Finish: The surface is left open and natural. There are no heavy pigments covering the hide; instead, the deep dyes penetrate the fibers, allowing the natural scars and life marks of the animal to remain visible—a true sign of premium, uncorrected leather.
